Layout A

TV centered on the east wall, easy chair centered on the west wall. The chair is the main listening position (MLP) for music, TV, and Vision Pro work.

All dimensions in inches. Speakers are shown toed in toward the MLP as a starting point. Computed positions are marked ≈; measured ones are exact.

How the layout is derived

  1. MLP is fixed. Chair is centered on the west wall; eyes and ears sit ≈10″ off the wall at mid recline.
  2. TV distance comes from the 30° target. The screen moves out from the east wall until it fills 30° of horizontal view. A 65″ needs ≈42″ of extension; a 77″ ≈23″; an 83″ ≈13″.
  3. Speakers flank the sightline cone. Speakers sit just outside the lines from the MLP to the screen edges, so they never block the picture. With the 65″, fronts are ≈42″ off the east wall (≈30″ rear-port clearance), level with the screen. With the 77″ and 83″, they're pulled back to ≈28″ (≈16″ clearance), with the screen ≈5″ (77″) or ≈15″ (83″) behind them. With the 65″, both pairs are also pulled ≈4″ inward per side (≈8″ closer together: ≈42° LS50, ≈32° Q3), so the inner Q3s tuck a few inches inside the screen edges — fine, since the TV mounts above the speakers.
  4. LS50 Metas outside, Q3 Metas inside (as in Layout B-1/B-2). Pulling the pairs back for the 77″/83″ moves the east-wall cancellation from ≈80 Hz up to ≈120 Hz.
  5. The group sits 6½″ south of center. Chair, speakers, and TV all shift together, as far as the south wall allows: the south LS50's nearest corner ends up ≈4″ from the wall (≈6″ with the 65″), leaving ≈17″ on the north side.

Acoustics

Head near the back wall

With ears ≈8–12″ off the west wall, the reflection from that wall cancels a band around 280–420 Hz (SBIR). EQ can't fix a cancellation — it needs thick broadband absorption (4″+) behind the headrest, covering both drywall and the shut glass door leaf. This also sits on the peak of every lengthwise bass mode.

Side-wall reflections

With the group shifted south, the two sides no longer mirror: first reflections land ≈80–96″ from the west wall with the 65″ and ≈92–113″ with the 77″/83″, closer to the chair on the south side. North is drywall — an easy panel location. South lands on Windows 2 and 3 — panels can cover the windows, so both sides can be treated. The south LS50 sits only ≈4–6″ from the south wall, so that side will also reflect earlier and a little louder.

Front-wall cancellation

The reflection off the east wall behind the speakers cancels a band set by their distance from it: ≈80 Hz with fronts 42″ out (65″ TV, at the sub crossover), ≈120 Hz with the 77″/83″ position at 28″ (above it — needs 4–6″ absorption on the east wall behind each speaker).

Audio rack under the TV

The audio rack sits centered on the east wall directly under the TV, back to the wall. The TV's bottom edge has to clear its 30.3″ top — tilt the screen down toward the MLP. With the rack out of the NE corner, no furniture sits within 12″ of any speaker at any TV size.

Desk on the north wall

The 58″ × 28″ desk sits flush with the NW bookshelf, back to the north wall (37–95″ from the west wall). With the group shifted south, ≈29″ separates its front edge from the recliner, and the side table (on the recliner's north side, flush with the west wall) sits ≈21″ from the desk. A file cabinet sits just east of the desk (95–110″ from the west wall), drawers opening south; the sightline to the north LS50 clears its corner by ≈4½″ with the 77″/83″, while with the 65″ that speaker lands ≈5½″ from it. The north-wall reflection zone falls above the desk (65″) or just east of it (77″/83″), so a panel there still works, and the sightlines to the north speakers pass just clear of the desk.

Room modes

Axial modes: 43 Hz (158″ length), 52 Hz (130″ width), 56 Hz (120″ height). The MLP is on the centerline (a 52 Hz null) and against the back wall (a 43 / 86 / 129 Hz peak). Sub placement plus room correction (miniDSP Flex, Audyssey, or YPAO) handles this.

Output at the MLP

At ≈9.5 ft (≈10.8 ft with the 77″/83″ position, ≈1 dB less), either pair reaches roughly 97–100 dB peaks at rated power before room gain. All four amps have ample headroom; high-passing the mains to the sub at ~80 Hz keeps them clean when pushed.

WindowsSouth wall, vertical sliders with blinds and shaded transoms. From SW corner: W1 48¾″–71⅜″, W2 78⅞″–101½″, W3 109″–131⅝″. Sills are ¾″ thick, 17½″–18¼″ off the floor, and project 2″ into the room. Glass is 58″ tall (to ≈76¼″), then 7¼″ of wall with a second sill, then 22¾″ transoms (to ≈106¼″) under the 120″ ceiling.
CoolingPortable A/C (Garvee 8000 BTU, 13″ W × 13⅛″ D × 34¼″ H, 50 lb, 59″ hose) vented through W1 (Layout A) or W3 (Layout B-1/B-2), powered from an outlet outside the room on its own circuit. The A/C duct panel lies landscape across the bottom of that window with the sash resting on it; acoustic panels may cover the windows except that window's bottom ≈5″. Floor vent on south wall kept closed.
